Complete Guide to Kashmir in Winter 2025

Bharat Sparsh TeamJanuary 15, 20258 min read

Why Visit Kashmir in Winter?

When most travellers think of Kashmir, they picture the golden hues of autumn or the lush green valleys of summer. But winter Kashmir — from December to February — is an entirely different world. A world of silent, snow-draped mountains, frozen Dal Lake, and the magical sport of skiing on Asia's best slopes at Gulmarg.

If you have ever dreamed of staying in a wooden houseboat wrapped in blankets while snow falls silently outside, winter is your season. The crowds disappear, the prices drop, and the valley transforms into something truly ethereal.

“In winter, Kashmir does not just look like paradise — it feels like it. The silence of fresh snow is the most peaceful sound you will ever hear.”

Best Places to Visit in Winter Kashmir

1. Gulmarg — Asia's Best Ski Resort

Gulmarg is the undisputed king of winter Kashmir. Located at 2,650 metres, it receives some of the heaviest snowfall in Asia and is home to one of the world's highest cable car systems — the Gulmarg Gondola. Whether you are a seasoned skier or trying it for the first time, Gulmarg delivers an experience you will never forget.

💡 Bharat Sparsh TipBook your Gondola tickets online in advance — queues can be long during peak winter weekends. We handle all bookings for our guests!

2. Dal Lake — A Frozen Wonderland

The famous Dal Lake takes on an extraordinary character in deep winter. In January, parts of the lake freeze over, and you can witness the unique sight of local vendors walking and cycling on ice. The shikaras (wooden boats) still glide through the parts that remain liquid, carrying vegetables and flowers to the famous floating market.

Stay in a houseboat on Dal Lake for at least two nights. Wrapped in traditional Kashmiri quilts (Razzais), sipping noon chai (salty pink tea), watching snow fall on the lake — this is Kashmir at its most intimate.

3. Pahalgam — Serene River Valley

Pahalgam, the “Valley of Shepherds,” is stunning in winter. The Lidder River partially freezes and the surrounding apple orchards are buried in snow. It is far quieter than summer and perfect for long walks by the river, pony rides, and photography.

4. Sonmarg — Meadow of Gold Under Snow

Sonmarg is usually closed to regular tourists in winter, but with proper permits and a local guide, you can witness the most dramatic snow landscapes in all of Kashmir. The road through Zoji La Pass is an adventure in itself.
